Ideal for both complete beginners and those who have tried Hill Walking before looking to take things to the next level, you will be taught by skilled and passionate instructors.

Where is the course located?

Located at our Centre in the fishing village of Annalong on the Mourne Coastline at the edge of the stunning Mourne Mountains and Mourne Coastal plain, the Centre is perfectly situated for all levels of Hill Walking all year round.

What will I learn on the course?

  1. The basics of planning and preparation for your journey to include route choice, fitness and equipment choice.
  2. The basics of Mountain navigation to include map interpretation and compass techniques.
  3. The basics of Mountain safety to include hazard awareness, avoidance and emergency procedures.
  4. To enjoy the natural environment responsibly using the principles of 'Leave No Trace'.

What is the course format?

Basic theory shall be covered each morning in our centre while other elements shall be introduced throughout the 3 days with emphasis on the practical application of the theory while out and about walking. All of the basics shall be covered on days 1 and 2 during two wild country walks and put into practice on day 3 on a summit walk to include Slieve Donard, Northern Irelands highest peak.

What does the centre offer?

This Centre has been offering a variety of Mountain courses since 1996. With highly qualified staff the Centre is has a wealth of experience teaching beginners to seasoned pros.

Located beside an historic harbour in the traditional fishing village of Annalong, on the edge of the Mourne Mountains and stunning Mourne Coastal Plain, a perfect spot for learning to Hill Walk.

When does the course run?

Courses start on either Tuesdays or Fridays all year round - check calendar for availability - or upon request for group bookings (4 or more).

What are the course pre-requisites?

  • Suitable for complete beginners and those who want to improve existing beginners skills.
  • Minimum age 12.
  • A sense of Adventure!

What is included in the course cost?

  • 6 hours of instruction/guiding each day for 3 days with a professional Mountain instructor.
  • All specialist equipment.
  • All in course transport (Pre and post course shuttles to and from our centre are available upon request).
  • All in course accommodation (Centre based with pre ans post course accommodation available upon request).

What can I do in my free time?

Enjoy the hospitality of the traditional fishing village of Annalong with Harbour Inn and Restaurants.

Enjoy the sites, sounds and attractions of the nearby seaside resort of Newcastle with stunning promenade and range of hospitality (Shuttles are available to and from Newcastle and other local towns and attractions upon request).

If you find yourself hooked on walking, you can enjoy a range of coastal walks or explore the Mourne Coastal Plain in your free time or if you would like a change try them on Mountain Bike (Available for hire).

What about local weather conditions?

Due to the flexibility of the course and the versatility of the region, weather rarely impinges upon the course, and remember there's no such thing as poor weather just poor clothing!
